Ephemeral Films

Ephemeral films are non-fiction films usually made for educational, industrial, or promotional purposes. The two classic ephemeral film collections found on the Archive are the Prelinger Archives and AV Geeks.

In addition to these classic collections, you may view guidance films from the post-World War II British government, drive-in movie intermission ads, and videos documenting the history of San Francisco from 1906 to the early 21st Century. Many of these films are available for free download.

His collection has grown to over 24,000 films gathered from school auctions, thrift stores, closets and dumpsters. He presents themed film shows in his home base of Raleigh, North Carolina and he's taken his shows on the road across the United States. Films from Skip's archive have been released on DVDs. This cautionary tale was aimed towards young, thrill-seeking teens. The exciting car chase at the end of the film may have glamorized joy-riding to students more than actually demonize it. If nothing else, the film reveals the primary perpetrator of auto thefts - bored, horny boys. To license this film and get a higher quality version for broadcast/film purposes, contact A/V Geeks LLC.

The disembodied voice shows up a lively party and manages to make everybody feel bad about drinking by having them play the "National Drinking Game" - a quiz to help determine if a person is an alcoholic. NOTE - This clip has a complete film countdown along with a "china girl" (not a girl of Chinese origin, but a clip of an attractive girl used by film processors to ensure that colors - such as skin tones - are being accurately duplicated). On the surface, this film may seem like an average science film about time and space, but like most of films from the Moody Institute of Science, there is an ulterior motive. The films host Irwin Moon had an interest in science as a child and later incorporated that interest into his life as a pastor. He would tour the country giving his Sermons of Science where the marvels of science provide the visible evidence of a Divine plan of creation. His work with GIs during World War II showed him the...

Young Billy Martin has to learn that being clean isnt the same as being a sissy. One night, a giant, talking cake of soap wearing tights and a puffy-sleeved shirt assures him of this fact. This film, like many personal hygiene films, taught kids about germs and what to do to avoid them in case their parents neglected to do so. Shows how a gold-mantled ground squirrel at Crater Lake National Park has learned to solve problems connected with getting food. Illustrates how an animal can learn to find food that is hidden from view or out of reach. This is one of the AV Geeks favorite films, mostly because Squeak is somewhat of a working class hero who, in spite of what obstacles "the Man" puts in his way, always perseveres. This German propaganda movie was part of a U.S. Navy archive compiled during WWII, and acquired by Periscope Film. This Kriegsmarine film shows the cruise of the German warships Gneisenau and Blucher in the North Atlantic in 1939 and 1940. These two ships were to be part of what Adolph Hitler hoped would be a new German Navy that would challenge Britain's mastery of the sea. The cruiser Blucher would be sunk just a short time after the film was made, in 1940 during the invasion of Norway. The...
